“I like this” – In the second paragraph of the article Erard states, “They’re meant to make someone realise that they’ve only been looking at one side of a thing.” This quote is talking about metaphors, and more importantly the effect they should have. Metaphors are used to open the eyes of people and make it easier to understand and I feel as though this is often forgotten or over looked. For me when I see a metaphor I never look at it in a way of understanding the topic better I just see a comparison. But that is not the purpose, it is meant to open the eyes of the reader to a fuller understanding of the concept and by Erard adding this to the article I have just realized this.

“Is this how metaphors are formed?” – When Erard states that metaphors are an intentional mistake I wonder if this is how each metaphor is created, even the most simple of metaphors. I am interested by this because making conscious mistakes just seems like a “shot in the dark” when creating metaphors. I also am fascinated by the idea of choosing certain things as they represent entire groups or ideas, thus allowing for the metaphor to make sense overall allowing a connection to be made. For example in the article where I made the comment Erard is talking about the metaphor created with the paintbrush and the pump and he explains that the metaphor makes sense because both items move liquid. This amazes me because who would ever compare a paintbrush and a pump, is this not far fetched because this seems extremely out there to me. But at the same time I have an understanding as to why they chose this.

  1. Your annotations are off to an amazing start. Great work, Emily! You’ve picked up on some important points this first read, and you do a wonderful job articulating what you find interesting about both points. Fantastic!
