“Life stories” are very important to me, as I do believe life is a story and that we go through life telling stories. Although I may be young I still do believe that even at age 19 I have a story and more than that I have many stories. Strawson disagrees with the idea of structuring our life through stories, as it generalizes our lives. Strawson goes on to talk about the idea of Narratives and the idea of shaping our stories along the narrative idea; he states “naturally disposed to experience or conceive of one’s life, one’s existence in time, oneself, in a narrative way, as having the form of a story or perhaps a collection of stories, and – in some manner – to live in and through this conception”. This stuck out to me right in the beginning of the article because Strawson does make a good point as everything around us is glammed up and it almost forces us to vamp up our own life stories, rather than telling it how it is. This reminds me of Becker’s article when she talks about remembering and telling the best parts of our stories, making these glorified parts of our stories more memorable. I do not feel as though this is a bad thing, it is simply acknowledging the good things within our lives. Overall, I believe narratives and story telling is a good thing, it is simply how we remember and tell about our lives as well as share past experiences.

  1. I agree that story telling is a good thing and agree that even though it is good it can get over the top in certain situations.

  2. I really liked you blog! I liked how you connected the two essays together and how you talked about how we glam up our stories. I would agree with this because sometimes we want our stories to sound more interesting. Nice Job!

  3. I love the use of quotes from both articles in your blog! Do you think that there are consequences for over-glorifying stories in our lives instead of telling the truth? Does this make our “life stories” less real for us and more of a story rather than an actual experience? Do you believe your life story will change as you grow older? Overall, I really like your blog and you should use this opinion in your writing but consider putting in more details about what a narrative means to you and maybe why you don’t think telling a story with a bit more detail is bad.

  4. I appreciate how you pointed out that it may not be the fact that we narrate that introduces inauthenticity–but the WAY that we narrate.
