Chapter eight of Graff and Birkenstein’s The Say/I Say talks about “connecting the parts”. In this chapter the topic of connecting one sentence to another is discussed. The idea of pointing words is also explained, which is where a pointed word is used to refer to a past topic or you can use this to talk about your next point. Another important component to this is using transition words. These will allow the reader to move through sentences and understand the point you are trying to make. By including a transition word it makes going form one point to another much easier and clearer. Transitions also indicate whether you are adding to the previous point or if you are moving on, again this makes your writing much clearer and easier to read. Chapter eight also talks about the importance of repeating yourself. This can be challenging because you do not want to repeat yourself in a way that is the same sentence over and over again but instead use this to connect the parts explained and keep your argument going. This will also help prevent from jumping from one idea to another. I chose this chapter because I felt this would be beneficial when revising my paper as it would help me make my reading smoother and make more sense. Then after editing my paper I found it did help to cut down on things I did not need as I was able to bring sentences and ideas together.
