In Jonah Lehrer’s “The Future of Science…Is Art?” we see the world of science and the ways it can be improved when studying new explorations. Lehrer’s main argument is that the arts are needed in science and they must work together to allow for progress to be made. He goes on to talk about how previously scientists were looking too in-depth, but needed to take a step back and better understand from the outside in. Scientists were not understanding the big picture, or the overall concepts before diving into things, Lehrer talks about the whole and how it is important to understand something as a whole in order to succeed. With the help of the arts this is more approachable. A metaphor may help to better create a comparison used everyday for new science discoveries or a picture or image made may help a scientist get an overall understanding. Lehrer elaborates that metaphors help us to have a better understanding of broader concepts much like sciences. As something extremely complex is now seen as  a simpler concept, made far more understandable. Overall the arts should be included in science as the gaps must be filled. Arts allow for a new way of thinking and an understanding for feeling, allowing for better questions and answers to be created.

synapse- a junction between two nerve cells, consisting of a minute gap across which impulses pass by diffusion of a neurotransmitter

epiphenomenon- a secondary effect or byproduct that arises from but does not causally influence a process

reductionism- the practice of analyzing and describing a complex phenomenon in terms of phenomena that are held to represent a simpler or more fundamental level, especially when this is said to provide a sufficient explanation
