I enjoyed reading Lamott’s article, I found it more than relatable when it comes to writing my drafts. At some points I felt as though it was too much, like okay we get the point, but overall she makes a good point; we all struggle when it comes to writing and especially a first draft. But with Lamott’s story it allows the reader to realize even professionals feel as though a first draft can be overwhelming as the idea of the perfect paper is on the line. But in reality we must write a “shitty first draft” in order to correct and rewrite the perfect essay, article or paper.

Revision Plan Strategy

  1. My goal for my paper is to clarify what my overarching statement is, and further decide what information is important to my topic and what should not be included. I want to keep from just talking about military metaphors and talk about the overall goal of metaphors and even include my own experiences in metaphors to then reflect back on my thesis.
  2. The steps I plan to take to achieve this goal is to first review and apply comments and suggestions given from my peers. I then want to to go through my paper and add my own comments and then apply them to my writing. I then plan to read my essay out loud to check for any missed errors.  Once I have done this I will rewrite my free draft as my final draft and review that. After going through and checking for further mistakes I will do want last revision to make sure my essay is complete.
  3. My biggest challenge would be editing my overarching statement to fully answer the prompt and then going through my essay and deciding what is relevant to my topic and what is irrelevant. I feel as though this is most challenging because when I was writing my paper I was unsure of what exactly I was answering and more importantly what it was I wanted to say, but after editing and talking to my peers I have a much better understanding of what I want my overarching statement to say and what I think should be included in my paper instead of just babbling about the different authors, their articles, and their opinions on metaphors.
  4. If there is a challenge that appears to be too difficult for myself to correct I will first go to my peers for guidance. If they also find this challenge too difficult I will ask a writing fellow for assistance. And if this does not seem to help I will email Professor Emerson asking for some direction on how to tackle my challenge in the best way.
