Chapter eight of Graff and Birkenstein’s The Say/I Say talks about “connecting the parts”. In this chapter the topic of connecting one sentence to another is discussed. The idea of pointing words is also explained, which is where a pointed word is used to refer to a past topic or you can use this to talk about your next point. Another important component to this is using transition words. These will allow the reader to move through sentences and understand…

After this peer review session I am ready to go back into my essay and revise. My biggest goal is to really target my thesis and incorporate only the most important and beneficial information into my paper, making sure that I am not adding useless information. In order to achieve this goal I am going to need to reread my paper and decide whether my text is relevant to the prompt or not. I then will review my peer edits…

They go in depth about the benefits of viewing and telling our experiences as a story. I hope to use these throughout my essay to strengthen my argument of creating self-narratives. “Life stories” are very important to me, as I do believe life is a story and that we go through life telling stories. Although I may be young I still do believe that even at age 19 I have a story and more than that I have many stories. Strawson disagrees with the idea of structuring our life through stories, as it generalizes our lives. Strawson goes on to talk about the idea of Narratives and the idea of shaping…

Especially when Becker stated “The redemption story is American optimism-things will get better!-and American exceptionalism-I can make things better!” Becker goes on to explain positive meaning in negative events. This is something very important to me, I believe having a positive outlook can…

Do you see any patterns? When reading the beginning of my essay it is clear there is repetition within my essay as I am looking to talk about the importance of the arts in sciences. But I don’t overly use pointing terms or transitions mainly because I feel as though they were not needed in this particular area of my writing. Do you rely on certain devices? I would say overall in my writing I often rely on transitions. I…

I really enjoyed reading your essay, I liked hearing about physical therapy and the way the arts would impact your projected career. I would consider clearing up your thesis just so you set the tone for your essay as to whether you want the arts to be apart of your major or not. And then use this in your conclusion to wrap the whole essay up. I think you did a really good job analyzing the quotes in relation to…

When brainstorming I tend to do some bulletin and free write. I find this works best for me as I can write down what I’m thinking without consequences and get simply get your thoughts on the page. Then bulleting is a good way of remembering key ideas and topics to be talked about throughout the paper, and even the introduction. Bulleting can include things to improve or opinions, but I find this strategy extremely helpful. As Yo Yo Ma states…
